Statement
I work in watercolors on paper and mixed-media
visual poetry, including some sculptural poems and
artist's books. in my visual poetry, the visual elements
comment on, and enliven, the linguistic significance
of the words. In my watercolors, which often depict
rural landscapes, old buildings, and city views, the
patterning and juxtaposition of bold colors give the
paintings an immediacy that emerges from an almost
abstract combination on realistic elements.
I believe that the mind and eye both discern
and
create visual patterns, and that art can mirror this
process. In my paintings, I strive to make differing
patterns of line, shape, and color interact in such a
way that there is both a visual balance and a sense
of motion, so that while the viewer feels a certain
repose, she or he also is invited to move deeper and
deeper into the process of viewing and re-viewing a
scene. I also use a distortion of perspective, bright
colors, and a neo-primitivist simplicity of shape to
encourage childlike enjoyment of a scene's colors
and forms.
