The Bismarck Art & Galleries Association was formed in January of
1983 in
Bismarck (pop 49,256). It was the consolidation of two local art organizations,
the Bismarck Art Association and Elan Gallery. The Bismarck Art Association
began in the early 1940's with a few collectors who wanted to have a combined
show of all local art collectors. The Elan was organized in 1967 by a
group of
local artists who wanted a permanent site to study, paint and display
their work.
In 1991, BAGA purchased and renovated an old railway freight warehouse.
This is the current location. BAGA hosts ten to eleven exhibitions a year
based
on a ration of 1/3 local, 1/3 regional and 1/3 national artists. Monthly
we feature
a local artist or group of artists in their smaller gallery and try to
maintain youth
work in the classroom gallery space.
BAGA encourages tours during regular hours for area
schools and also works
with the local CVB to accommodate conventions tours. They are in partnership
with the THEO Art School and offer a variety of art classes year around.
They
have a scholarship available through a grant from Dayton's to provide
art instruc-
tion for a variety of social services/private organizations. They host
a community
wide art show at the local mall and during this time they offer tours,
demonstrations
and have a wide variety of artwork for public viewing....there are no
fees (this is
NOT a fundraiser.) Workshops include The Flickertail Woodcarvers and the
Capitol
City Quilters along with 2-3 for artists per year.
Hours: Tuesday through Friday: 10 am-5 PM Saturday and Sunday: 1 pm-3
