The Cando Arts Council/Center/Gallery was formed in 1983 by
Shelly Lord, Babe Belzer, Diane Duty, and Sue Ackre in Cando
(pop. 1,564). The Council hosts yearly performing musical arts
for the high school and during the summer months, a children's
musical along with adult plays and local talent performances.
The Center/Gallery has been working with area schools
and
display student artwork. This past year 604 pieces of art were
displayed and judged with 125 pieces taken to the Taube Museum
of Art in Minot for state competition and 14 were chosen. CAC
hosts 8-9 art or fiber works per year and other exhibitions they
think will interest their area. 2-3 exhibitions are generally through
NDAGA, one regional connection (relative or friend), and open art
show, folk art show combined (includes quilts, dolls, etc.), one yearly
student art show and the ND Student traveling show.
They have held 3 murder/mystery dinners to raise money
for
improvements. Local area schools (Rocklake, Bisbee/Egeland, Leeds,
Rolette, Border Central and Wolford) often tour the gallery and the
auditorium where it is housed. The Center often offers workshops on
various topics, oil paintings to T-shirt decorating. Every year they host
an open art show at the Hawk Museum during their Annual Museum
Days Festival in June.
Hours: Tuesday through Sunday: 1-4 PM.
