The Dickinson State University Art Gallery began operation in 1972 by
Dennis Navrat,
a Professor of Art at Dickinson State University, under the name of Mind's
Eye Gallery.
The solitary gallery in Dickinson was a cooperative venture of the Department
of Art,
The Badlands Art Association, and Stoxe Library. All three provided operational
funds.
The gallery was located in Stoxen Library.
In August of 1997 the Dickinson State University Art
Gallery was moved to its present
location, in the newly remodeled Klinelfelter Hall on campus, with seventy-owe
running
feet of usable wall space. The name change wa also implemented at that
time.
The mission of the Gallery is to address the visual
arts educational and cultural needs of
southwestern North Dakota. This goal is accomplished through individual
exhibitions by
emerging artists, touring shows by established artists, guest artist presentations
and work-
shops, art demonstrations, and group shows sponsored by local schools
and the Dickinson
State University Art Department. Annually, ten to eleven visual art exhibitions
are scheduled
form September through June.
The gallery today is funded by Dickinson State
University, private donations, and a grant
form the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from
state legislature,
and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The gallery is open from 8:00 am. to 8:00 p.m. weekdays, and by request
on weekends.
