North Dakota Museum of Art began in the early 1970s as the University
Art Gallery. It was located on the third floor of the Memorial Union at the
University of North Dakota, Grand Forks (pop 49,425). In 1985, the Museum
became the official Art Museum for the state of North Dakota. It was one of
the first art museums in the country to serve the state and the university at the
same time. In September of 1989, the Museum was moved to its present location
on Centennial Drive. The Museum is funded by federal grants, foundation grants,
memberships, and fundraising. As of July 1997, the Museum is totally indepen-
dent of the University of North Dakota. The Museum hosts ten to twelve contem-
porary exhibitions annually. It has a large permanent collection, offers children's
art classes, cultural enrichment group, two Concert series and a reader's series.
